Organizing with pegboard is a great way to store your tools and DIY materials and supplies, which is why you’ll find pegboard in the garages, workshops, sheds and basements of many DIYers. But there are so many more places you can use pegboard than your work area. For example:

Pegboard is also a great solution for organizing supplies in your home office. Add some shelving for pegboards or make your own from wood or shelf board to create a custom bookshelf.

Pegboard is available in a variety of materials and finishes, including metal, plastic and prefinished hardboard. You can even make your own pegboard with a sheet of plywood and a Forstner drill bit. Just follow the instructions below. Of course, you can paint a standard brown pegboard or decorate it to match the décor of any room, which increases its versatility by giving you the ability to add lights, put up wallpaper, add a border and more.

Now that you know you can use pegboard to organize your things, you might be wondering how to organize your pegboard. Manufacturers make pegboard hooks for pretty much anything you can think of. And if you can’t find the hook you’re looking for, you can often combine hooks with other household items to make your own. For example, you can use binder clips for things that aren’t made to hang on a hook. Just clip the item then hang the clip.

Think about what you’re going to hang before you start organizing your pegboard. Put the items you’re going to use most often in a spot that’s easy to reach and things you won’t use as often in hard-to-reach areas of the board. You can group your tools by function — screwdrivers with screwdrivers, hammers with hammers, etc. — or size. Or maybe you want to organize them by color. You have the freedom to organize it in a way that’ll work best for you.

Can You Put Shelves on a Pegboard?

Many manufacturers make shelving for pegboards that’s easy to install, or you can use brackets and shelf board to make your own. You can also cut your own boards and paint them to match the décor of your room. You can dedicate one area to shelving for pegboard or hang your shelves in a pattern. Shelving makes organizing with pegboard a breeze.
