Pop-Up Drain Installation Step by Step

Pop-up drains are one of the most popular drain styles. When you press down on the lift rod, usually located behind the faucet nozzle, the lift rod causes the pivot rod under the sink to raise the drain stopper, which opens the drain so water can flow through. Conversely, when you pull up on the lift rod, the pivot rod in turn pulls the drain stopper down, sealing the drain.

If the drain seal isn’t as tight as it used to be, it may be time to replace your pop-up drain assembly. Another reason to replace your drain assembly is if you’re remodeling your bathroom or replacing your sink. Once you’ve picked out your new pop-up drain assembly, you can begin the process of installing it. We’ve included the general steps to this process below, but always follow your drain kit’s specific instructions.
