What Is a Gable Screened Vent?
A gable screened vent, also known as a gable vent screen, is a mesh barrier that’s installed behind a gable vent on the roof. Most gable vents are shaped like triangles or rectangles, but it’s not uncommon for them to be shaped like circles, octagons or squares.
Gable vent screens allow air flow while keeping rodents, insects and debris from entering the attic. Gable vents regulate the temperature in the attic by allowing hot air to escape in the summer. They keep the attic cool, which reduces the load on your air conditioner. Gable vents also help prevent moisture buildup, reducing the likelihood of mold, mildew and wood rot.
Some modern gable vents have integrated screens already built in. For those that don’t, you’ll need to supply a vent screen if you want to keep your attic pest-free.
If you want to replace your existing gable vent, our guide to choosing gable vents can help you with that.
Installing a Gable Vent Screen
The process of replacing a gable vent screen is easier if you can safely access the vent from the attic. If you can’t, accessing the gable vent outside requires using a ladder. Use the buddy system — have someone hold the ladder while you climb up to the gable vent and install the screen. Practice ladder safety:
- Verify the ladder can hold your weight.
- Ensure the ladder is on a flat and stable surface.
- Always maintain three points of contact with the ladder.
- Never lean or reach away from the ladder.
- Don't climb or work past the second rung from the top.

Keeping the Air Flowing With a Gable Screened Vent
Gable vent screens are an effective way to keep rodents, insects and debris out of your attic while maintaining the temperature, especially during the hot months. Replacing a gable screened vent is easy when you access the vent from the attic, and you can do it in a few steps. You can access it from outside, however, that does require a ladder and extra safety precautions.
