Select a Dimmer Switch

First determine the type of lightbulb that will be connected to the dimmer. If you plan to use LED, CFL, xenon, halogen, HID or fluorescent bulbs, make sure the dimmer switch is rated for use with those specific bulbs.

Next, determine how many lights will be connected to the dimmer and add up their wattage. For example, if you have two 75-watt lights, your total load is 150. You will need a dimmer that's rated for at least 150 watts. Finally, take note of the kind of switch you have, as this will determine the type of dimmer you need. The instructions in this article are for a single-pole dimmer switch.

Install the Dimmer Switch

Follow these steps to safely install a dimmer switch.

Caution

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation and safety. Check to see if you need a permit. Observe applicable building and electrical codes. Contact a licensed electrician if you have any doubts or questions about the connections, or if your home's wiring doesn't appear compatible with the changes you're making.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to frequently asked questions on dimmer switch installation.

Can I Install a Dimmer Switch on Any Light?

A dimmer switch can be installed anywhere there is an existing on/off switch. The dimming capability will be in the bulb itself, so you will want to ensure that the bulb you use (LED, CFL, incandescent, halogen) is dimmable rated. This will be indicated on the bulb’s packaging.

Do You Need Special Wiring to Install a Dimmer Switch?

If you are simply replacing an old single-pole light switch with a light dimmer, the wiring will be the same with the same connections. Likewise, a 3-way dimmer can easily replace a regular 3-way switch. The dimmer element is simply a part of the switch and does not require any additional wiring.

Can You Replace a Regular Switch With a Dimmer Switch?

Yes, you can typically swap out a regular switch for a dimmer switch and it's considered relatively simple to do. Just be sure to match a standard dimmer with incandescent or halogen bulbs as these work with most dimmers. If you have LED lights, pair them with an LED dimmer switch. LED bulbs will not function properly on a regular dimmer as they need special technology in the switch to be fully dimmable.
