8 Steps on How to Use Wood Fillers for Small Repairs
Follow these steps to effectively repair, restore and enhance your wooden surfaces using a wood filler:
A wood filler cannot repair highly damaged wood.
Start by choosing a wood filler that best matches your project needs. Make sure that the filler matches the color of your wooden surface.
- Water-based wood filler: If you need to patch up small cracks on indoor wooden surfaces, use a water-based wood filler. It is easy to apply and can be stained or painted after drying.
- Oil-based wood filler: An oil-based wood filler is best suited for moisture-prone areas. It also dries faster and can be used both indoors and outdoors.
- Epoxy wood filler: Epoxy-based fillers are stronger, making them perfect for outdoor repairs. But you must mix the filler well before applying it on the wooden surface.
Never use water-based wood filler in moist areas like bathrooms or kitchens. Read the user manual of the wood filler before applying it on any surface.
Take the wooden furniture to your porch or any other well-ventilated place. In the case of fixed or heavy furniture, ensure the areas to be repaired are easily accessible. You may need to remove some items from furniture like cabinets or bookcases to ensure a clear working surface.
Wood fillers may give off a pungent smell. If you are working indoors, open the windows and switch on the fans for good ventilation. Wear a respirator while applying it on the furniture.
Check the wooden surface for any splinters or jagged edges. Use sander or sandpaper to smooth out these imperfections. Remove all the dust and debris with the help of a vacuum cleaner.
Wear safety gloves, safety glasses and a respirator when sanding the wood.
If you’re using epoxy wood filler, you’ll need to first open the can of epoxy wood filler and mix it with the help of a popsicle stick. Allow the materials to combine into a smooth paste.
If you are unsure of how to apply wood filler, start by scooping out generous amounts on a putty knife. Apply this wood filler on the wooden surface and press it into the gaps. You can also use your fingers to ensure the wood filler reaches into the deeper cracks. Consider wearing gloves for protection if you are using your fingers to apply the filler.
If you are filling a nail hole, ensure that the filler is slightly overfilled. Now, use the same putty knife to smooth out the wood filler. Use a tack cloth to remove any accidental spills.
Apply wood filler gently and make sure not to gouge the putty knife into the cracked area.
Allow the wood filler to air dry completely. This may take up to a few hours, depending on the type and depth of the repair.
Once the wood filler has dried, use a sander or sandpaper to level the surface. Ensure you move the sander in the same direction as the wood grain. Remove the dust caused by sanding with the help of a vacuum cleaner.
Wear safety gloves, safety glasses and a respirator when sanding the wood.
Check the repaired surface for any leftover gaps, cracks or nail holes. Follow the same process as above to repair these areas. Once complete, you can either stain or paint over this dried and sanded wood filler to match it with the color of the wood.
