Whether you need to take on a repair or simply change your blinds to revamp your windows, removing your blinds the right way is key. Here’s how to unclip and remove your window blinds even if the brackets that hold them in place are hidden.

How to Remove the Valance

Most blinds have a valance attached over the headrail secured with valance clips. You will need to remove this first.

  • Examine the clip to see how it's attached. Common types include push-and-release, twist-and-pull, and those that require a flathead screwdriver.
  • For most clips, you will need to either press the clip inward or upward to disengage it from the headrail or twist a small tab or notch in the correct direction to unlock it.
  • If the clip is stubborn, carefully insert a flathead screwdriver between the clip and the headrail. Gently pry the clip open to release it from its hold.

How to Take Down Venetian Blinds

  • Step 1: Raise the blinds all the way to the top by pulling the cord.
  • Step 2: To dislodge the headrails from the bracket, you might need to push the blind towards the window and then rotate it downwards until you are able to release it from the bracket.
  • Step 3: If the sides of the headrails have brackets that are secured with screws, simply use a flathead screwdriver to unscrew them.

How to Take Down Roman Blinds

  • Step 1: Begin by lifting the blind fabric all the way up to reveal the headrail mechanism underneath. You may use velcro or clips to temporarily hold the fabric in place while you work.
  • Step 2: The wall brackets for Roman blinds differ in their slots for the headrail to fit in. Depending on the model, you would either have to push a small button or turn a lever as you push the headrail down and turn it away from the wall.
  • Step 3: Some Roman blinds would have clips secured to the wall bracket. Taking down these Roman blinds would require you to simply apply a bit of force and push in on the headrail to release it.

How to Take Down Roller Blinds

  • Step 1: You should notice a chain loop on either side of the blinds. These loops are used to control the raising and lowering of the blinds. To remove the brackets that secure these loops in place, use a screwdriver to unscrew them. Do this on both sides of the blinds.
  • Step 2: With the brackets removed, you need to remove the round tube. Depending on the model, you should either find a clip that needs to be pried up and out or a swivel plate that needs to be rotated.
  • Step 3: Use a flathead screwdriver and insert it between the clip and push towards the opposite bracket to remove it. The same tool can be used to rotate the swivel plate by inserting it in the grooves of the plate and turning it until the blinds come loose.
  • Step 4: After the roller blinds have come loose on one end, the entire tube can be pulled out easily.

How to Take Down Vertical Blinds

  • Step 1: Pull the cord to open the vertical blinds completely.
  • Step 2: To remove vertical blinds, all the vanes of the blinds need to be removed first. The vanes are the vertical strips of fabric or material that make up your blinds. You will notice that the top of the vanes are attached to a clip-like vane carrier that holds these vanes in place. You will need a flat object like a card or a plastic shim to unlock a small mechanism in these carriers.
  • Step 3: Slide the thin object between the vane and the vane carriers and gently apply upward pressure to the vane while simultaneously pulling it downward.
  • Step 4: The vanes should quickly be released from the carriers. Repeat this process for all the vanes and do this with care so as to not damage the vanes.
  • Step 5: To remove the headrail, locate the brackets that are held by spring clips and insert a flathead screwdriver between this clip and the headrail.
  • Step 6: In a simple twisting motion of the screwdriver, the headrail should come right off.

How to Take Down Cellular Blinds

  • Step 1: Pull the cord so that the blinds completely close and rise to the top. Lock the blinds in place.
  • Step 2: To remove the headrail, hold it on both ends from below. Push the headrail towards the window and then rotate it towards you.
