How to Rotate Crop in Your Garden

Rotating crops offers several benefits for your garden. When the same plants grow in the same spot season after season, they deplete the soil of specific nutrients. Crop rotation breaks this cycle. It also minimizes pest problems by confusing insects that rely on specific plants.

Avoid Common Crop Rotation Mistakes

While rotating crops is effective, there are a few mistakes to avoid:

  • Don’t Skip Rotation: Even if you’re short on space, it’s important to rotate crops whenever possible. Use containers or vertical gardening to create extra room.
  • Group Plants by Family, Not Type: Rotating by plant family is more effective than just switching out vegetables. For example, both potatoes and tomatoes belong to the nightshade family and should not follow each other in a rotation.
  • Over-planting: Avoid growing too many of the same plants in one season. This can deplete the soil faster and make pests a bigger problem.
