How to Replace a Deck Railing

Check if the existing posts are damaged or rotting. In such a condition, you must consider replace them​. Remove any rough spots and clean off dirt and debris. Also, make sure to check the height of the new railing sections.​​ Use a miter saw to cut the posts to the exact height you need. 

Place the bottom rail in position. Secure it to the posts with exterior screws or bolts. Attach the deck balusters to the bottom rail. Make sure they are evenly spaced as per the local building codes. Secure them with screws or brackets. Place the top rail over the balusters and secure it to the posts with screws or bolts. Make sure the rail is level before fully tightening the fasteners. Attach the balusters to the top rail with screws or brackets.

Don’t forget to check the condition of the existing posts. If they are damaged or rusted, replace them. Use a wire brush to remove rust and debris​.

If your new metal railing has base plates, place them at the base. Then secure them with bolts or screws. Make sure it is at the same level before fully tightening the fasteners. Attach the balusters or metal panels to the bottom rail.

If your existing posts are damaged, replace them. Wipe down the posts to remove dirt and debris. Double-check that they are smooth and ready for the new railing. Measure ​​the height of your new railing with a measuring tape. Then ​​use a miter saw to cut the posts to the required dimensions. 

If your new railing has base plates, place it at the bottom. Attach it to the posts using screws or brackets. You need to make sure it is at the proper level before fully tightening the fasteners.

Once you have removed the railings, you’ll need to work on the railings posts. Refer to the next part for the steps on how to replace your railing posts. You can reinstall these railings in the same manner you had dismantled them.

Next, measure and mark the spots where you want to place the posts. If you want to install new posts, dig or drill post holes in the new area using a shovel or drill to the required depth.

Then, cast concrete mix in these holes and fix deck post anchors. Place the posts to the ground and level as required. Then, allow the concrete to dry up before fixing the railing.

New deck boards should be allowed to acclimatize for 3–5 days before installation. Acclimatization allows the new deck to settle with the new area’s moisture and heat. This ensures that it does not split during installation.

Reattach the railing posts on top of the fastening points. Refer to the deck and railing manual for more instructions.

Once the post is perfectly fixed in the new concrete pads, proceed with reinstalling the top and bottom rails. Lastly, consider post caps and lighting to match the renewed deck surface.
