Can You Paint Backsplash Tiles?

If you’ve ever wondered if you can paint backsplash tiles or paint over tile paint, the answer is yes, if you understand the basics. This article on how to paint a tile backsplash will tell you everything you need to know, including how to clean and prepare the tile area for painting.

How to Paint a Tile Backsplash in the Kitchen

Kitchen tile backsplashes get exposed to heat, moisture, oil and grease. Clean the backsplash area before you start painting kitchen tiles.

Caution

  • Wear gloves and safety eyewear to protect your hands and eyes from the cleaning solution and deglosser you spray on the tile backsplash.
  • Allow proper drying time. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations on the paint and primer to know the exact amount of time they take to dry completely. Rainy days can require a longer drying time, so keep your home well ventilated.

Step 1: Clean the Kitchen Tile Backsplash

  • First, clean the area around the kitchen backsplash. Remove all the kitchen utensils and materials from the surrounding area.
  • Wear a pair of gloves to protect your hands.
  • Take a small bucket of water and add trisodium phosphate (TSP) to it according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Use a sponge to scrub the wall of the backsplash with the mixture until the grease is removed.
  • Empty the trisodium phosphate and water mixture from the bucket after cleaning the backsplash and rinse away any residue. Now add fresh water to the same bucket and use a clean sponge to remove the cleaner from the backsplash surface.
  • If there are any damaged tiles, repair them as needed before moving forward. Make sure to use repair products that can be painted over.
  • Lightly sanding the tile with a 220-grit sandpaper can help the primer and paint set better. Be sure to wipe away the dust afterwards.

Step 2: De-Gloss the Kitchen Tile Backsplash

  • Put some deglosser on a clean cloth and rub it on the tile backsplash. This will give the backsplash a smooth texture for painting.
  • Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions on any deglossing product, including safety recommendations.
  • Let the tile backsplash dry completely before continuing with the next step.

Step 3: Coat the Kitchen Tile Backsplash with Primer

  • Before you put on the primer coat, apply painters tape on any surfaces and corners that you don’t want to get paint on.
  • Pour some primer into the paint tray and use a paint brush to apply the first coat of primer on the edges of the tile backsplash.
  • Use a paint roller to apply primer to the rest of the tile backsplash. Roll it in the same direction to keep the coat even on the tile.
  • Allow the primer to dry according to the manufacturer’s recommendations before applying the paint.

Good to Know

Make sure you use a paint and primer that is suitable for painting on tile. Check the manufacturer’s label to be sure.

Step 4: Paint the Kitchen Tile Backsplash

  • Wash the paint tray and roller after using the primer and allow them to dry completely. When you’re ready to resume painting, pour tile paint into the tray.
  • Use a paint brush to apply paint to the edges and corners first and use a paint roller for the remaining areas, just as with the primer coat. Roll the paint roller in the same direction to evenly color the tile backsplash.
  • Remove the painters tape once the paint is dry.
