Types of Lampshades
Cotton
Cotton is one of the most commonly used materials for lampshades. It is a great choice because it is durable, highly versatile and produces an even ambient light. Another great thing about cotton is that you can create a wide range of vibrant colors and patterns. Acrylic paint is ideal for cotton because it is adaptable, has a fast-drying time and can stick better to the cloth.
Linen
Linen is an adaptable fabric because of its appealing rustic simplicity. Compared with cotton, linen seems more relaxed because of its naturally occurring slub and somewhat stiffer texture. It also creates a beautiful ambient light and is lighter than other textiles. Fabric paint works best on linen lampshades because it sticks easily onto the material.
Seagrass
Seagrass lampshades are an environmentally friendly lighting option. Its distinct texture and warmth creates a calm and comfortable ambiance, giving a hint of coastal charm. A soft natural color such as white beige or light gray would match the earthy texture of a lampshade made of seagrass.
Burlap
Burlap lampshades have an earthy, rustic look. They are made of coarse jute fibers. Burlap is a common lampshade material because of its strength and breathability, particularly in farmhouse-style or bohemian environments.
Before You Begin
You can use spray paint acrylics or other water-based for painting lampshades. Opt for a can of spray paint if you want to go with a solid color and finish the project quickly. Another fantastic choice is fabric paint. It is a heat-resistant acrylic polymer that attaches to fabric and can withstand minor scratches and heat from a hot lightbulb.
How to Paint a Lampshade
Painting with Spray Paint
Fabric paint or spray paint works well for a burlap lampshade. This is the fastest way to paint a lampshade. Note that spray painting offers quick coverage but less control over texture and layering compared to brush painting. Choose the method that best suits your project goals and skill level.
Safety First. Wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from paint mist. Use a respiratory mask to avoid inhaling paint particles. Work in a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors or in a garage with open doors.
- Cover your work area with drop cloths or newspapers. Remove the lampshade from the base and place it on a protected surface.
- Take a can of spray paint of the color you like and shake the spray paint can thoroughly before use.
- Hold the can about 6-8 inches away from the lampshade.
- Apply the paint in light even strokes moving the can continuously to avoid drips.
- Start spraying before you reach the lampshade and continue past it for an even coat.
- Apply a thin even first coat all over the lampshade. Allow this coat to dry completely (usually 15-30 minutes but check the paint can for specific drying times).
- Once dry check the lampshade under good lighting. Look for any missed spots or uneven areas.
- Most projects require at least two coats for full coverage. Apply the second coat in the same manner as the first. If needed apply a third coat for complete even coverage.
- Allow the lampshade to dry and cure fully before reattaching it to the base.
- This may take 24-48 hours depending on the paint type and environmental conditions.
