What is Stucco and Is It a Good Choice for Me?
Stucco is a common exterior wall covering that’s existed for thousands of years. It’s essentially a variety of plaster that consists of sand, cement and water, and it’s commonly found on Spanish or Mediterranean architecture. The main benefits of stucco are that it lasts a long time, can be easily customized to suit the desired look and doesn’t require of a lot of maintenance. Stucco can have a smooth or textured look, depending on how it’s applied. It can also be tinted during the installation or painted over after it’s fully dry.
Because stucco has an uneven surface, it may not be the best choice for locations that frequently experience high winds. This can cause large pieces to break off during storms or wind gusts. Stucco can be cleaned fairly easily by rinsing it with a garden hose or using a pressure washer on its lowest setting. Although the material is prone to crack over time, it can be patched as needed with a commercial stucco patch product.
Planning to Install Stucco
Applying stucco is a time-consuming, multi-step process that involves building up several layers of product over a base layer. Although it can be done as a do-it-yourself project if you have the skills and experience to paint your entire home’s exterior, many choose to leave the job to a professional.
The steps below are designed to provide a general overview of the most important steps to help you plan for the project. Detailed directions (including drying times) may vary greatly, depending on which type of product you use, whether you plan to tint it or paint over it and the type of surface you’re applying the product to. You may also find that you need additional tools or materials not mentioned in the list above. Always defer to the manufacturer’s instructions and follow all safety precautions. As with any major home improvement project, check local building codes and Homeowners’ Association rules before beginning work.
