Pull-Down Attic Stairs
You can add or replace an attic stair system to make your attic more useful and allow for easy access to the space. Pull-down attic stairs (also called fold down attic stairs or drop-down attic stairs) let you hide them away when not in use and conveniently pull them down when you need them.
This guide will show you how to cut and brace a hole for a new attic stair entrance, and then how to install the attic ladder into that hole. Whether you’re starting from scratch or replacing existing stairs, we’ve got you covered.
Before You Begin
Here are a few important things to keep in mind before you install an attic ladder:
- Improper installation may result in serious injury. Read and follow the manufacturer's instructions for your attic stair model. Certain steps specific to your model may not be covered here.
- Installation requires two people.
- Ensure that you have the right size pull-down attic ladder and that there's suitable landing space in the attic for safe mount and dismount from the ladder. The ladder length will depend on your ceiling height. Also make sure there’s enough floor space to accommodate the ladder when it’s fully extended. Dimensions vary by ladder type so check the manufacturer’s requirements for your ladder model.
- Check the attic ladder for any damage prior to installation. Look for cracks or bends in metal ladders and splits, bends or warps on wooden ladders. Also check that all rivets and fasteners are tightened on the attic folding stairs.
- For safety reasons, don't remove the plastic straps that hold the ladder sections together right away. Wait until instructed.
- Don’t open the attic stair unit until prompted to do so in the instructions.
Cutting and Bracing a New Hole
Before installing new attic stairs, you'll first need to cut out the hole.

Installing the Stairs
Your stair unit is likely held together with a tie. Leave that tie in place until you’re finished with the installation, or the ladder could unfold and injure someone.
