How to Install and Replace a Shower Arm

Whether you plan to replace your shower head or not, it's best to remove it. It makes further work easier. First, hold the shower head firmly and locate the nuts. Then take a wrench and begin unscrewing them. Do this by turning the wrench in an anti-clockwise direction.

Now, locate the nuts on the shower arm. Use a wrench to turn it in an anti-clockwise direction to detach it from its attachment point, typically directly on the wall. It will loosen the shower arm and help unscrew it. If you’re replacing the ​shower arm on a bathtub, remove all the other fixtures, like filters.

The threads of the water supply pipe could have mold, mildew or mineral buildup. Use a cleaning cloth or mild cleaning brush to clean them.

After cleaning the threads thoroughly, wrap plumbing tape around them. It is important to create a watertight seal to prevent leakage from the shower arm.

Take the shower arm you wish to install. Align it properly with the shower arm and screw it in manually first. Ensure that it is correctly aligned while doing so. If you can't get it right, unscrew it and try again.

Once you are satisfied with the alignment, use a wrench to screw it in further. Tighten the shower arm as much as you can to secure the connection.

If you want to install an adjustable shower arm, make sure you purchase the right screwing nuts along with it. To install it, place the movable arm on the shower arm pipe. Secure the shower arm with nuts using a wrench.

Now, hold the other side of the shower arm where the shower head will be attached. Wrap the plumbing tape around the pipe threads on this side of the shower arm.

Take the shower head you previously unscrewed. If you are replacing it, grab your new one. Place it on the shower arm threads with the plumbing tape and rotate it in a clockwise direction. Make sure it fits well and then use a wrench to tighten the connection.

​If you are installing a shower arm for a bathtub, you might want to add additional components, like filters. Use plumbing tape or a plumber’s putty to prevent water leakage from these attachments. Secure them with the help of an adjustable wrench.

Turn the main water supply back on. Turn on the water in your shower head and check for any water leakage across the shower arm. If there’s no leakage, the shower arm has been correctly installed. If you notice small leaks, use a plumber's putty to create a waterproof seal.
