How to Prepare for Hanging a Mirror
Before you begin, there are a few things you need to check.
This project assumes you’re hanging a mirror with an existing frame. Give an unframed or dated bathroom mirror a fresh look with a new frame. We’ll show you how with our step-by-step tutorial on how to frame a bathroom mirror.
Hardware for Hanging Mirrors
Heavy mirrors require plenty of support and suitable hardware to ensure a sturdy installation. You can find picture-hanging kits that include everything you need to hang your mirror, including screws, anchors and picture wire.
If you want to hang your mirror on a door, such as a bathroom or closet door, instead of a wall, you may need some extra hardware. If the door is hollow, screws won’t hold the mirror securely in place. Instead, consider over-the-door hooks or mirror-hanging clips for the installation.
Drywall Anchor Tips
Need to know how to use drywall anchors correctly? Take a look at How to Use Drywall Anchors to see several examples of anchors and to learn how to install drywall anchors of different types. If there are existing anchors in the wall that you don’t need, see our guide Remove Unwanted Wall Anchors.
If you have plaster walls, make sure the anchors are designed to hold in plaster.
There are many types and sizes of drywall anchors as well as all-in-one screw and anchor products. Make sure you’re installing drywall anchors rated to support the weight of the items you’re hanging.
How to Hang a Mirror Using Hooks
If your mirror came with D-rings or wire already mounted on the back, installing hooks on the wall may be the easiest way to hang the mirror.
How to Hang a Mirror Using Cleats
You can also use metal cleats to hang mirrors with sturdy frames. Cleats have a two-piece design, with the top cleat positioned on the back of the mirror frame and the bottom cleat secured to the wall.
How to Hang a Mirror Using Cross Brackets
Some mirrors have three cross brackets located on the back. These brackets have cross-shaped recesses that let you support the mirror with screws. You can hang the mirror vertically or horizontally, depending on which two brackets you use.
How to Hang a Mirror With a Single Bracket
If you want to hang a mirror with a single bracket, you’ll only need to focus on the outside recesses in the bracket.
