Common Issues with Screen Doors

Damaged Screens

It is one of the most common problems that can be caused due to very harsh weather conditions, accidents, pets etc. Small tears can be fixed easily at home if you can learn how to patch a screen door, if bigger then the door has to be replaced.

Roller Issues

The rollers are the main thing keeping screen doors working properly. They work on proper lubrication, which can become problematic if that is not done. Dirt and debris can cause them to become loose, come out or get stuck.

Crooked Framing

It can be tough to open or close a door if the framing is wrong or gets misaligned later. So it is essential to keep an eye on while the framing is done when the screen is getting set up.

Broken Handles

If the latch is broken, the door won’t shut completely. Handles can also loosen over time or due to rough handling, such as pushing or pulling too hard.

Safety Precautions to Remember

General Safety

  • Wear glasses, mask, gloves and other protective gear
  • Make sure the room is well-ventilated if you are using lubricants for the door
  • Keep a first aid kit nearby
  • Use a stable ladder if you are climbing or ask someone to hold it.
  • Be careful around the glass from the door.

How to Patch a Screen Door

Removing the Old Screen

Use a regular screwdriver to loosen the adjustment screws so the door can come out quickly. Then, push the rollers up from the bottom to remove the door. Also, unscrew and remove the door latch. Use a pic or a small screwdriver to pull out the other side and remove the screen.

Installing the New screen

You will need a binding spline that matches your current slide. Next, get a new screen and measure so you have extra inches on each side that overlap the door frame.

Now measure your new spline and cut it to fit the same length that fits the frame and put the new screen over the door frame. Make sure it overlaps and lays flat on the outside edge of the frame.

Next, put the spline in the groove. Press the roller over the spline into the groove, and your screen will stay tight and flat. Roll on the spline installation tool to press the screen into the groove around the door.

After setting your spline, use a knife to cut the screen right at the edge of the slide. Pick your sliding door back and push the rollers up to fit it in. Tighten the adjustment screws.  Now, you have a brand new screen for your sliding screen door.

Caution

Be careful when using a knife and scissors to cut the spline and screen.

How to Fix Sliding Screen Door Rollers

Here is your guide to fixing the Rollers of your door

Remove the Door

First, remove all the springs or screws on the door. You can use a Phillips Screwdriver or a regular one for this. When the screws are out, you will be able to push the door up and down.

Now, to pull out the door completely, slide a Knife between the door and frame at the bottom until you reach the roller. Now lift the knife and your door will come out of the frame after you do the same thing on the right side.

Remove the roller

Remove the roller from the door. It will feel a little bouncy when you press it. Notice a small gap between the roller and the screw that it was attached to. Push the screwdriver between the gaps, and the roller will come right out.

Install a New Roller

Use a blow dryer to remove the dirt and debris from the place, put the pointy side of the roller inside and push it down just like we did while taking it out. Now, just install the screen again by using the knife to make a gap for fitting the door. Slide the door and check if it is attached correctly.

Fixing a Door Handle

Remove the Old Latch

First, get a screwdriver and remove the screws from the handle. Hold the handle while doing this so it won’t fall. Remove the handle from the locking tab, then the exterior part of the handle.

To remove the latch, take two screws, one at the top and another at the bottom. First, remove the bottom screw, hold the latch with a plier so it does not enter the door. Now remove the upper screw and pull out the latch easily.

Install a New Latch

Push the new hatch into the hole. First, remove the hook inside the latch and hold it with a plier, just as we did while taking it out. Now using the same flow, insert the top screw first, then the bottom one. After the latch is done, next comes the handle.

You may need someone to help you place the handle from outside. Place the handles on the door inside and outside of both, then insert the screws on the handle from inside and now you have a brand-new handle.

Tip

Do not over-tighten the screw. It can lead to strip screws, door cracking and loosening the holes.

Fix the Door Frame

The last thing step in the process of how to fix a screen door is aligning the frame or fixing a jammed door.

Checking the Alignment

  • Check the frame for any damage or bends
  • If there are any loose screws, tighten them
