How to Troubleshoot and Repair a Dehumidifier
Common dehumidifier issues include insufficient airflow caused by clogged filters or blocked vents, poor water tank placement or overflow which prevents operation and electrical issues such as tripped circuit breakers or broken power connections. Here’s how to tackle each of these problems
- First step is to turn the power switch off and unplug the dehumidifier.
- Then check the power cord of the dehumidifier. If any strands of the power cord are damaged then cut them.
Safety Measure: If any strands of the power cord are damaged, unplug the dehumidifier immediately and contact a qualified technician for safe and proper repairs to prevent electrical hazards.
- If necessary, replace the dehumidifier's power cord using wire strippers.
- Tighten the ends of the cord with a screwdriver. Clip the strand hooks to the power cord's ends and switch on the power supply.
How to Fix a Dehumidifier that Freezes Up
Most dehumidifiers are not designed for use in colder environments and may freeze.
- Remove the cover panel to check for ice. If you find any ice obstructing any parts, let it melt and do not start the unit again until the room temperature exceeds 65 degrees Fahrenheit.
- The second step is to disconnect the dehumidifier and test the overflow using a digital multimeter.
- Clip the leads of the dehumidifier to the ends of the digital multimeter’s cutoff switch.
Safety Measure: Always ensure the dehumidifier is unplugged before connecting the leads to prevent electric shock.
- Then turn the dehumidifier's handle as far as it will go in either direction. If the digital multimeter reports 0 ohms across a small section of the dehumidifier, then it is working. If it records 0 during the whole procedure, it is broken and needs to be replaced.
How to Fix a Leaking Dehumidifier
A float assembly controls the water level and stops the bucket from overflowing.A blocked float assembly may fail to alert the user when the reservoir is full which can cause it to overflow and leak.
- Check the float assembly in the water collection tank. Make sure it is in good condition and that it moves freely up and down.
- Inspect the reservoir tank by removing it and checking for leaks or damage. If you find any breaks that are leaking water, use waterproof repair tape to seal the leaks until a replacement part arrives.
- Clean the drain tube. The drain tube links the evaporator pan to the reservoir tank.
- A clog in this tube can cause water to leave the dehumidifier instead of entering the tank.
How to Fix Dehumidifier Sensor
A dehumidifier sensor measures humidity levels and controls the unit's operation to maintain optimal indoor conditions.
Safety Measure: Ensure safety by consulting your dehumidifier's user manual before unplugging the humidity sensor and thermistor.
- Refer to the user manual of your dehumidifier and carefully unplug the humidity sensor from the collection bucket float switch and electronic control board.
- Next, take out the thermistor (a small part) from the copper tube near the evaporator coil.
- Use a clean cloth to wipe the dehumidifier sensor clean without using any abrasive cleaners or applying too much force.
- Finally, put the sensor back where it was, making sure that the connections are secure.
- If this doesn’t resolve the issue, it means that the dehumidifier sensor is damaged and needs to be replaced.
How to Fix a Dehumidifier that won't Collect Water
The compressor or fan motor getting damaged is a sign that your dehumidifier is no longer absorbing moisture from the air and points to a problem with the compressor, fan motor, or coils. If the room temperature is below 65°F the dehumidifier may struggle to operate effectively.
Safety Measure: Ensure the power is off before attempting to repair the fan blade and motor gear of the dehumidifier.
- The fan motor should rotate freely and the fan blade has to be properly attached to the motor gear. If the motor does not rotate or make any noise, it may still be faulty, but it must be tested further by an expert.
- To test the fan, carefully run the machine in fan-only mode. If it hums but does not rotate or if it rotates extremely slowly, the motor might be damaged. Depending on your model, you will need to access the motor by referring to the user manual for specific instructions. Typically, you'll need to remove the unit's casing.
- Disconnect the wires carefully and remove the faulty motor. Follow the instructions to rewire and assemble the motor back in place.
- Alternatively, refer to your manual to access the coils and clean the coils with a soft cloth to get rid of any dirt or lint.
Maintenance
Keeping your dehumidifier in top shape is simple. To prevent water damage, regularly empty the water collection tank and clean it with warm, soapy water monthly. For optimal performance, clean the air filter with a vacuum cleaner or rinse it. Ensure proper airflow by leaving at least six inches of space around the unit.
What to Keep in Mind
Humidity Levels
You should maintain the humidity levels between 30 to 50 percent. If the humidity is higher than that, it may cause dampness.
Choosing the Right Spot
The basement is a good place to keep a dehumidifier. It has the highest humidity level compared to the rest of the house. If you can keep the humidity level consistent in the basement, you can do the same throughout the house. Another benefit is that the basement is usually closer to the drain and water can easily drip directly into it, which prevents moisture.
Leaving windows and doors open
Keeping the windows and doors open allows the outside humidity to enter the house, which causes the growth of moisture in the air.
Empty the dehumidifier
It is important to drain out the water accumulated in the dehumidifier once the bucket is full. If the water remains for an extended period of time, dampness develops.
Clean the dehumidifier often
Dehumidifier is used to suck moisture from the air, it also happens to collect dust particles with it. So it is crucial to clean it regularly to avoid any damage.
