How To Compost In Winter

Due to winter, the process of decomposition slows down. Make sure you collect and chop all your kitchen waste into smaller pieces so it can break down easily for the formation of microbes.

Before you add all the compost items into the compost bin, make sure to have a proper balance of brown and green material that you will use to compost during winter. Maintain a ratio of 2:1 of brown to green material.

Now, you are ready to start composting and stuffing the things into the compost bin. Take your compost bin outdoors and add the material layer by layer. Make sure to add alternate layers of brown and green materials and layering will create air pockets within the waste pile that allows the decomposition to occur correctly.

Now, once you have added all your layers, it's time to insulate your bin so that decomposition happens effectively. For this, wrap your bin with straw bales or old blankets and make small holes for moisture control.

You have completed the process of making compost during winter. Keep checking your compost pile occasionally and add water if it has dried up. Once it is ready, use a pitchfork to mix the compost.
