A waffle maker is a fantastic kitchen appliance that can quickly whip up delicious breakfast treats. But, cleaning it can be tricky, especially if batter spills or burns onto the plates. This article will explain how to clean a waffle maker to ensure it lasts longer and stays in top condition.

Things to Consider Before Cleaning Waffle Makers

  • There are 3 main types of waffle makers: Basic waffle makers, waffle makers with removable plates and flip ones. Recognize your type and make sure to read the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Make sure to unplug the waffle maker.
  • Remove the plates from the removable waffle maker.
  • If the cord is removable, take it out.

Caution

The waffle maker should be cooled down before cleaning if it has been used recently. Attempting to clean it while hot can be dangerous and could damage the non-stick coating.

Tip

Wipe up any spills immediately to prevent them from hardening.

How to Clean a Waffle Maker

A waffle maker should be cleaned after each use to prevent food buildup and maintain its performance. This section includes steps to clean all types of waffle makers.

Clean the Plates

  • Use a soft brush or toothbrush to remove crumbs from corners and grid crevices.
  • For non-removable plates, use a soft cloth moistened with warm water and a small amount of mild dish soap if necessary.
  • Gently wipe down the grids, avoiding getting excess water on the heating elements.
  • For removable plates, soak in soapy water for 10–15 minutes, then use a sponge to scrub any stuck-on batter or grease.

Caution

Avoid harsh chemicals that can damage the non-stick coating of your waffle maker. Stick to gentle cleaning agents.

Remove Grease and Stains

  • Mix baking soda with a little water in a 1:1 ratio to form a paste. Apply the paste to all greasy and stained areas.
  • Use a cloth or toothbrush to scrub the paste on the plates. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then wipe clean with a damp cloth.
  • Mix vinegar and water in a 1:1 ratio, dip a cloth in the solution and use it to wipe greasy areas.
  • For the burned-on batter, place a damp cloth or paper towel on the grid, close the waffle maker and let the steam loosen the burned batter. Then, use a damp cloth to gently remove the batter.

Tip

Scrape off the batter gently with a rubber spatula to avoid damaging the non-stick coating. Also, if the plates are dishwasher-safe, you can place them on the top rack of your dishwasher.

For Crevices and Tight Spaces

  • Dip a cotton swab in warm, soapy water to clean around the edges and in tight spots.
  • A soft toothbrush can reach tight spots where food and grease may have accumulated.

Cleaning the Waffle Maker's Exterior

  • Wipe down the exterior of the waffle maker using a damp cloth, removing any or spills.
  • If the cord is removable, take it out and clean it with a damp cloth.

Caution

Never immerse the entire waffle maker in water, as this can damage the electrical components.

Dry Thoroughly and Reattach

  • Dry the plates thoroughly with a towel before reattaching them to the appliance. This prevents moisture from seeping into the machine.
  • For flip waffle makers, Dry all parts thoroughly, including the pivot mechanism, to prevent rust or buildup in moving parts.
  • Keeping an appliance clean regularly is essential to maintaining it as an easy-to-clean waffle maker.

Maintenance

  • After each use, wipe down the plates immediately with a damp cloth or paper towel to prevent food from hardening.
  • Use mild soap and a soft sponge to clean the plates. Harsh chemicals can damage the non-stick coating.
  • Ensure the plates are completely dry before storing them to prevent mold and mildew.
  • Store the waffle maker in a cool and dry place.
  • Periodically, deep cleaning is good. Disassemble the plates (if possible) and soak them in warm, soapy water to remove stubborn residue.
