Over time, PVC pipes can rust and degrade. This can be avoided by preventing the accumulation of dirt, mold and other impurities. These cleaning methods result in cheaper maintenance and replacement expenses.

Tools and Materials

How do you Clean PVC Pipe

General Cleaning Method

  • Apply any household spray cleaner on the PVC pipe and allow it to soak.
  • Next, use a soft-bristled brush to gently scrub away dirt particles from hard-to-reach areas inside the PVC pipe.
  • Wipe down the PVC pipe with a lint-free cloth
  • Repeat the process as necessary.

Caution

Chemicals such as sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid are used in the majority of PVC pipe cleaning techniques. If without wearing any gloves, these chemicals can injure a person by causing severe burns. Always carefully read and follow the safety instructions provided on chemical product labels.

Caution

Wear rubber gloves when working with chemicals as they don't break down like standard gloves.

Removing Markings Method

  • Use a fine-grit (200-300) sandpaper to gently remove ink and markings from the PVC pipe's surface.
  • Smoothly rub the sandpaper along the printed areas with even strokes. Ensure that the unwanted imprints are properly erased.
  • Using a damp cloth, wipe down any residual PVC particles from the surface. Ensure it is thoroughly clean.

Caution

This process releases particles that can be harmful or irritating to the lungs. Ensuring that the environment is well-ventilated is important for lowering health hazards when doing this activity.

Remove Markings with Acetone

  • Wear gloves when handling acetone. Apply a small amount by tipping some acetone onto the steel wool.
  • Rapidly work the surface of the PVC pipe in a circular motion with the acetone and on the steel wood.
  • Concentrate on lettering and bar codes, as the acetone will evaporate quickly.
  • Using a clean cotton rag, quickly wipe the ink and stains down the pipe in a straight line until they are gone.
  • If the markings still appear, allow the ink to dry again for 3 minutes, then repeat the steps.

Caution

Wear a mask or respirator or work in an open garage with open windows. Vapors from the acetone may make you feel dizzy.

Tip

This method requires you to work quickly with acetone as it evaporates almost immediately. You should perform this work in a well-ventilated area and use a respirator.

Caution

Do not use large amounts of acetone, as it will run down the pipe and cause the ink to streak around the circumference of the pipe.

Polish PVC to Remove Scratches

  • To remove scratches or marks on surfaces, create a simple paste by mixing baking soda with water.
  • Using safety gloves, gently apply the paste to the affected area in a circular motion.
  • After applying toothpaste or the mixture to the PVC surface, wipe it off using a separate wet cloth until clean.
  • If a cloudy film remains on the surface, rinse the cloth and wipe it again until there is no residue.
  • Check the marks or scratches under a light source. If marks or scratches remain, repeat the process.

Caution

Always wear safety glasses when handling chemicals to protect your eyes from potential spills, splashes, or accidental contact.

How to Clear PVC Pipe Blockages

There are two ways to clear PVC pipe blockages:

Household Plunger and Drain Snake Method

  • The most popular tool for fixing clogged drains is a plunger
  • Put the plunger over the drain and press down firmly. Pull it straight up with gentle force.
  • To enhance the plunger's effectiveness, add a small amount of water to the sink, toilet, or shower before plunging. This will help to create suction around the drain, making the plunger work more effectively.
  • A drain snake is a versatile tool for dislodging stubborn blockages deep within your drain pipes.
  • Simply insert the snake into the drain and gently push it forward to encounter the obstruction. Then, use a combination of pushing and pulling motions to dislodge and remove the blockage.
  • Repeat this process a few times until the blockage is cleared.

Dish Soap Method

  • For simple clogs, mix in a few drops of dish soap in warm water.
  • Then, pour it down the drain.
  • Rinse by pouring water all over.

How to Unclog the Drain in PVC Pipe

These two methods will tell you how to fix a clogged PVC drainpipe:

Drain Cleaner Method

  • Chemical drain solutions are widely available at hardware and grocery stores.
  • These reasonably priced cleansers are excellent for clearing tiny clogs or stubborn buildup.
  • All you have to do is pour, wait for a few minutes and rinse it by pouring some water.

Baking Soda and Vinegar Method

  • Pour a ½ cup of regular household baking soda into the drain and then add a ½ cup white vinegar.
  • Cover the drain and let the mixture stand in the drain for several minutes.
  • Next, pour five or six cups of boiling water, which is 100°C (212°F), into the drain, which will remove any dirt and grease.

Caution

Never try this method immediately after using a commercial drain opener, as baking soda and vinegar can cause a harmful reaction when they come in contact with the chemicals.

Maintenance

  • Use a mild detergent and warm water to clean fittings exposed to dirt and debris.
  • Apply a small amount of silicone lubricant to the fittings to reduce cracking and prevent wear and tear.
  • Keep PVC fittings within their recommended temperature range to prevent damage.
  • Ensure that fittings are installed according to manufacturer instructions and compatible with the types of pipes and materials that they will be connected to.
