When we need to clean our bathroom space, we usually think of fixtures like showers, bathtubs and toilets. We rarely pay attention to other things like the mirrors, curtains or cabinets that are also a part of our bathroom. Here’s a guide for how to clean all your bathroom accessories with ease.

How to Clean Shower Caddies

If not cleaned often, your shower caddies can develop mold and mildew. Additionally, the constant steam from your showers also contributes to this process and may rust the caddies. Here’s how you can clean them:

  • After every shower, use a dry cloth and wipe down the entire surface of the caddies.
  • Using an all-purpose commercial cleaner is a good way to clean your caddies.
  • For mold and mildew, use a mold remover. Empty your caddy and spray this solution over the affected spots. Refer to the instructions on the remover to know how long it should be left on. Rinse thoroughly with water after.
  • For metal shower caddies that are prone to and have developed rust, use a rust dissolver and spray into the rust spots. This will effectively get rid of spots in 30 minutes or less.

Tip
Always check the manufacturer's instructions of any cleaners that you use. Make sure it is compatible with the material of your shower caddie.
Tip
Whatever the method, make sure that you dry the caddies completely. Doing this will prevent mold, mildew, rust or bacterial growth.

How to Clean Light Fixtures

One of the easiest ways to refresh your bathroom space would be to clean any light fixtures in the room. Here’s how to clean your light fixtures:

  • Use a dry, microfiber cloth to dust down any dirt that has accumulated over the surface.
  • For dust that has been caked-on due to the humidity, fluctuating temperatures and the constant heat of the light bulb itself, you may need a damp cloth.
  • For a better clean for your light fixtures, use a commercial cleaner. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to spray it over the surface and dry it down with a soft cloth.
  • Alternatively, you can always use mild soap and water.

Caution

Turn off the switches before you clean them. For extra precaution, you may turn off the electric supply from the breaker box.

Good to Know

If your light fixtures have covers or shades that can be removed, use a screwdriver to remove any screws to disassemble. Follow the same steps for cleaning any removable fixtures.

How to Clean Soap Dispensers and Dishes

Maintaining hygiene in your bathroom also means cleaning your soap dispensers and dishes because they’re used often. Here’s how to clean them:

  • Most soap dispensers are made of stainless steel. A damp cloth to wipe down your dispensers should suffice.
  • Alternatively, use warm water and a bristled brush to scrub away soap scum.
  • To create a more effective cleaning mixture for the scum, add one part baking soda to two parts vinegar. This creates a fizz. When it stops fizzing, apply it over your dispenser.
  •  Allow the mixture to sit for at least 15-20 minutes before cleaning it with clean water.

Tip

Always check on a hidden area first and avoid using any abrasive methods or cleaners or it can damage the finish.

How to Clean Toothbrush Holders

Toothbrush holders are crucial to maintaining cleanliness and hygiene. Cleaning your toothbrush holders regularly will prevent the build-up of bacteria or mold and mildew. Here’s how to clean your toothbrush holders:

  • Soak your toothbrush in a solution of mild soap and warm water for at least 10 minutes. This will loosen any accumulated residue. Scrub it off with a bristled brush and rinse.
  • For tougher residues and stains, you may prepare a bleach solution. Dilute 1 part of bleach with 10 parts of water. Submerge the holder into this solution for 5-10 minutes and rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Tip
Clean your toothbrush holders at least once a week and consider replacing them every 6-12 months

How to Clean Mirrors

One of the challenges of having a mirror in your bathroom is that it fogs up real quick and wiping them down may not always help with defogging. Here are some effective ways to keep your mirrors clean and clear:

  • Rub a thin layer of soap over the mirror and wipe off the residue with a dry cloth. This creates a microscopic layer that acts as a barrier.
  • Another way is to apply shaving foam and buff off the excess.
  • A wipe-down with a vinegar-based all-purpose cleaner will quickly help clean the mirror rims.

How to Clean Curtains

Over time, soap scum and mold can accumulate on the surface of your shower curtains. This can affect the quality of air in your bathroom. Here’s how to ensure a clean curtain:

  • If you don’t have time to take down your curtains, you may spray a vinegar-based cleaner to drench the curtains entirely. Allow it to sit for at least 10-15 minutes before rinsing it down with water.
  • To wash your curtains, remove them and load them in your washing machine. Use a gentle washing cycle with warm water and mild detergent. Place towels with the load so that it prevents wrinkling.

Tip

After every shower, make it a point to allow your curtains to dry by pulling them close instead of pushing them to one side.

How to Clean Towel Holders and Grab Bars

Be it your towel bars, bathroom racks, towel hooks, or grab bars, all of these fixtures are used daily. Cleaning them is a straightforward task that requires using the right cleaning solution and method. Here’s what to do:

Tip
Think about the material and finish of these fixtures to select the right cleaning solution. Always refer to the manufacturer’s label to know what cleaner is compatible with your fixtures.

How to Clean Bath Mats and Rugs

Cleaning your bath mats regularly gets rid of a lot of germs and prevents the development of mold and mildew. Washing your bath mats is the only way to go:

  • Throw in your bath rugs into the washing machines with a gentle laundry detergent and warm water. Allow it to dry completely.
  • For microfiber and plastic mats, rinse them with mild soap and detergent. Use a soft bristled brush.
  • Additionally, add ¼ cup of vinegar to your detergent for its disinfectant properties.

Tip

Always check the tags to know what kind of cleaners and what washing machine setting is suitable for washing.

Maintenance is Key

It takes hardly any time and effort to clean all the accessories and the items in your bathroom and you don’t even have to do it all together. Commit to cleaning the same kind of fixtures together or items that require similar cleaning methods. Now that you know how to clean these items in your bathroom, you should make sure it stays that way. One of the best ways to care for your bathroom space is maintaining a cleaning regime. Make sure that you clean everything in your bathroom at least once a week, depending on its condition.
