What is Transmission Fluid

Automotive transmission fluid is a lubricant that ensures smooth gear shifting and transmission functioning. It reduces friction, keeps the transmission cool and reduces the effects of wear and tear. It further acts as a hydraulic fluid in automatic transmission cars.

A car must always have the recommended level of transmission fluid. If not, it can lead to serious problems, like gear slippage, overheating or complete failure.

Signs of Low Transmission Fluid

When the transmission fluid level drops, you may experience some warning signs. Here are some early signs of low transmission fluid:

  • Slipping gears: It could be difficult to shift the gears or the gears might shift with a sharp jerk. The car may even be slipping out of gears.
  • Overheating: You might notice overheating of the transmission system, like gears or clutch. One of the main tasks of transmission fluid is to keep them cool. Overheating of these parts could mean your car is low on transmission fluid.
  • Warning sign: Many modern vehicles have integrated sensors to detect low transmission fluid. Be vigilant of this warning sign if your car displays it.
  • Other signs: Strange noises like grinding or clunking sounds when shifting gears and a burning smell could be signs of low transmission fluid. If you notice any leakage of red and brown fluid, check the transmission fluid.

Where is the Transmission Fluid

To check the fluid level, you must first understand where the transmission fluid is located. In most vehicles, you can find the fluid dipstick near the engine bay. It is usually placed in the same area as the oil dipstick. In some cars, you may also find it where the transaxle or transmission meets the engine’s rear.

Caution

Check the manufacturer’s manual to locate the transmission fluid correctly. Do not open any parts without consulting the manual.
