Identify and Fix a Weak-Flushing Toilet

If the toilet won't completely flush or if you have to hold the lever down, the problem might be the flapper.

Check that the chain is attached to the flush lever and that it has the right amount of slack. Typically, 1/2 inch of slack with the valve closed is the right amount to lift the flapper. If there’s too much slack, the flapper won’t be raised high enough when you push the handle. This is a simple fix. Adjust the length of the chain to get to the 1/2-inch slack level.

If the tank is not getting enough water, you might need to adjust the fill valve. The fill valve controls the water flow that refills the tank. It also works in conjunction with the float, which should sit at the proper water level line. If no water level indicator is present, set the water level so that it falls 1/2 inch below the overflow pipe.

Tip

How to adjust the water level will vary depending on the type of fill valve you have. Most toilet models have an adjustment screw to control the float height, but if yours doesn't, adjust the water level by rotating the fill valve body.
