How Do You Know When to DIY?
Home improvement projects are very rewarding when they go relatively smoothly, but they can be a headache if you try to take on more than you can realistically handle. Here are some important questions to ask yourself when deciding whether you should seek help from a pro or do the project yourself.
Do I Have the Necessary Skills?
Every do-it-yourself project requires its own set of skills, including how to use certain tools, how to measure appropriately and how to follow necessary safety precautions. Some skills can be acquired quickly with minimal effort while others, such as sanding, painting and drywall taping require practice to become proficient. Some projects even require special certifications and licenses, like HVAC and electrical work. Before you decide to take on a new project, make a short list of skills you’ll need to acquire. If developing those skills requires more time than you’re able to spend, it may be best to hire a pro or seek help from a friend with experience.
Is the Project Dangerous?
Many common DIY projects are relatively low risk if you follow the manufacturer’s safety recommendations for any tools and wear the appropriate safety gear. However, other projects, like roof work, need to be approached with extreme caution. Before trying something new, make sure you understand the dos and don’ts. If you fear taking on a project yourself may put you in danger, it’s best to rely on a licensed technician.
Will I Have to Buy Expensive Tools?
One common mistake first-time DIYers make is forgetting to budget for the cost of tools. Unless you already have a well-stocked workshop — which technically makes you a more experienced DIYer — you’re going to have to buy or rent some tools. And if you must rent large machinery, such as a concrete mixer or wet saw, you may need to also rent a vehicle large enough to transport the tools to the jobsite, which adds to the expense.
For projects that don’t require a lot of labor, it may cost more to purchase and transport the tools and materials to the jobsite yourself than hiring a contractor to do the job. Even if you’ve factored in tool and material costs when planning, it never hurts to check and see if local pros offer free quotes. You might be surprised by their bottom-line offer.
How Much Did I Enjoy My Last DIY Project?
For many, a home improvement project can be a truly enjoyable and memorable experience. Some lighter projects also present an opportunity to get the whole family involved. However, if your last project only took one Saturday afternoon, allow for the possibility that your enthusiasm may wane with a major construction project that takes a week or more. Before you commit, be sure you won’t run out of steam before the project is complete.
Do I Have Time?
Lastly, you should consider the time investment required for a DIY project. Although you may be willing to commit to a major task that requires hours of work a day on your own behalf, if you have young children or elderly parents that need attention living in your home, it may be a challenge to find the time to work, in which case a professional may be your best bet.
