Note

Items may be Special Order in some stores. Product costs, availability, and item numbers may vary online or by market. Paint colors may vary slightly from those shown. Availability varies by market for lumber species and sizes.

Constructing Your Planter Box

We show this planter box built from cedar with a stain finish. If you plan to paint the box, however, a more economical alternative would be to build it with pressure-treated wood. To do so, substitute treated boards for the tongue-and-groove cedar boards. Refer to the project resources for specific lumber requirements. Allow the treated lumber to dry thoroughly before priming and painting it.

Tip

Tongue-and-groove cedar boards have a rough face and a smooth face. Throughout this project, orient the smooth faces to the outside.

Building the Base

The base will be the foundation of your planter box to provide stability and strength.

Installing the Frames

Now that you have the legs and back assembled, you can start to add in the planter box frame.

Add the Planting Tray

The planting tray is where your greenery will sit.

Build the Planter Box

The next step is to build the planter box to surround the planter tray.

Make and Attach the Doors

Cutting and assembling the doors means you are almost finished with your planter construction.

Completing Your Project

Congratulations, you're almost done with your new raised planter stand.
