Create a Custom Plank Headboard

Apply a coat of water-based tinted stain and let dry.

Sand the boards just enough to expose bare wood. Spray two coats of water-based polycrylic finish over wood and let dry.

Decide on a height for your headboard. Create a pattern by making rows comprised of different lengths of wood. Measure the lengths and cut the boards accordingly.

Find and mark studs.

To ensure the wood won't split, pre-drill holes into the boards before nailing. Then, beginning with the bottom row, nail the wood to wall, from left to right. Drive the nails directly into the studs to fasten the boards securely to the wall. Make sure to level each piece as you go. Continue working your way up, row by row.
