Even the sturdiest of doors can encounter issues with time. There are certain factors that cause these issues that you should know about. We’ll walk you through some common door problems and help you fix them with easy solutions.

Door Hinge Problems

If the screws in your door's hinges come loose, or the hinge itself gets old and weak, the door might not shut all the way. This also leads to friction which can cause your door to squeak and scrape against the door frame or your floor.

  • For squeaky hinges, the solution is lubrication. Apply a silicon-based lubricant or even oil. Work the lubricant in by opening and closing the door a few times.
  • For loose hinges, simply tighten screws with a screwdriver.
  • You may need to replace the hinge if the screws are stripped or the hinge itself is severely damaged.

Tip

Avoid using WD-40, as it can attract dirt and make the problem worse in the long run.

Door Latch and Lock Problems

A damaged or worn-out lock compromises security and can be a serious concern. The solution to this door problem is to check for a misaligned strike plate or a failing lock mechanism.

  • Loosen the screws on the strike plate and adjust its position until the latch connects smoothly.
  • For the lock, checking and reworking the alignment or lubricating with graphite powder should work.
  • If the problem persists, you might have to change the mechanism entirely.

Drafty Doors

Drafts are a common door problem. When your door lets unwanted air in, it increases energy costs and affects indoor comfort.

Sagging Doors

Loose hinges can cause your doors to sag. A sagging door scrapes your floor, hindering the smooth opening and closing of your door. Refer to the same steps mentioned under ‘Door Hinge Problems’ for the solution to this door problem.

Sticking Doors

A sticking door prevents your doors from moving smoothly. Humidity fluctuations, loose hinges or dirt accumulation can hinder the smooth opening and closing of your door.

  • First, inspect the gap between the door and the frame on both sides. If the gap is uneven you might need to adjust or tighten the hinges.
  • Consider sanding down any uneven areas causing your door to stick.

Warped Doors

Over time, doors can warp due to moisture exposure or temperature changes. This problem can cause the door to rub against the frame or become difficult to close. In severe cases, a warped door can even crack.

  • Apply wood glue to the concave side of the warped door.
  • Clamp it flat and apply even pressure along the warp.
  • Tighten the clamp to straighten the wood.
  • Wait for the glue to dry for 24 hours.
  • Sand down any residue, if required.

Damaged Door Frame

Door frames can crack or split due to moisture, impact from slamming doors or general wear and tear. A damaged door frame allows for air drafts and prevents your door from closing correctly.

  • Caulk any gaps or cracks to create a smooth surface.
  • Fill nail holes or gouges with wood filler and sand smooth once dry.
  • Repaint for a fresh look.

Tip

For easier access we recommend removing the door entirely, especially if the crack is on the hinge side.

Door problems can be as varied as they are common. Understanding what kind of door problems exist and to what extent they can damage your doors can be very helpful. The good news is that the solutions to these common door problems are easy DIY fixes.
