Factors Affecting Overall Cost

Wood flooring is a warm, beautiful flooring option that instantly adds value to a home. Wood flooring costs vary by project. Below are some factors that affect overall cost.

Wood type: Wood costs vary by type and can range from $3 to $18 a square foot. To save on wood flooring installation, use a budget-friendly option like engineered wood flooring. If you’re set on installing real wood, choose domestic woods like oak, maple and hickory instead of exotic species like mahogany.

Furniture removal: Prior to wood flooring installation, the room must be cleared of furniture. You can save on installation costs by moving the furniture yourself. If you’re unable to, our professional independent installers can move furniture for you at an additional cost. For more information on furniture removal costs, check out the FAQS at the bottom of this page.

Room size: The larger the space, the more wood flooring you’ll need to complete the project. This will increase installation costs.

Installation method: There are a few methods used to install wood floors including nail-down, glue-down, click-and-lock and floating. Nail-down wood flooring is generally the most expensive option while floating installation, used with engineered wood, is the most affordable option.

Trim, moulding and transitions: Baseboards, quarter-rounds and transitions between rooms will add to the overall cost of wood flooring installation.

Hardwood Construction Types
3/4-inch solid hardwood must be installed over a plywood subfloor at or above ground level.

5/16-inch solid hardwood is a thinner version of 3/4-inch solid hardwood. This wood type is thin enough to be glued down to concrete at ground level or installed over plywood.

Engineered wood flooring is designed for installation over concrete. Less expensive than solid wood and more environmentally friendly, it expands less than solid wood and is ideal for moisture-prone areas.

Waterproof hardwood is a mix of hardwood and bamboo with a waterproof protective coating. It resists moisture but offers the look and texture of traditional hardwood.

Locking or floating hardwood floors feature a tongue-and-groove installation system that doesn’t require nails, staples or glue.

Wood Styles
Wood flooring varies significantly by species, color, width and texture. Some homeowners prefer dark wood floors that offer a rich, formal look while others go for lighter gray and white hardwood options that offer a more casual feel.
