Factors Affecting Overall Cost

Vinyl flooring is a budget-friendly, durable flooring option that is water-resistant and/or waterproof, scratch resistant and easy to clean, making it a great choice for busy homes. In general, hiring a professional is more expensive than doing the job yourself. If you are considering the DIY route, make sure you’re comfortable with all aspects of the project. Don’t hesitate to call in a professional if needed — it could end up saving you money in the long run.

Here are some factors to consider when it comes to the overall cost of vinyl flooring.

Furniture Removal: Furniture will need to be cleared from the room(s) before the installation can take place. Move furniture yourself if you’re able. Otherwise, installers can move it for you, but you’ll need to plan for that additional charge.

Old Floor Removal: There are some instances where vinyl can be installed over an existing floor. When that’s not the case, your old floors will need to be removed before installing the new flooring.

Floor Condition: Flat and level floors are required for proper installation. Any sanding and leveling needed is an extra expense. If new underlayment is needed, that’ll add to the overall cost too.

Location and Room Size: The bigger your space, the more flooring you’ll need. You’ll also want to consider where you’re adding new floors — areas like stairs or hard-to-reach spaces require more cutting to fit.

Vinyl Type: While vinyl flooring overall is a cost-effective option, different types of vinyl flooring come at different price points. Vinyl sheet flooring is the least expensive, while vinyl tile and vinyl plank cost a little more. Likewise, patterned versus single-style vinyl flooring can affect cost as well.

Installation Method: Peel-and-stick vinyl flooring is typically the quickest and easiest to install. You can expect interlocking/floating and glue-down vinyl flooring to be more expensive.

Moulding, Trim and Transitions: Working with or adding any of these details can make your project more expensive.

Vinyl Flooring Types
Vinyl tile offers the look and feel of real ceramic or stone tile at a more budget-friendly price. It’s also waterproof, meaning it can be placed in any room in the house, including bathrooms. Options include styles that are laid end to end without grout as well as groutable vinyl tile.

Vinyl plank flooring mimics the look of real wood, with different colors and textures available. Planks are typically 4 to 6 inches wide by 3 or 4 feet long. Like vinyl tile, wood vinyl flooring is also waterproof.

Vinyl sheet flooring comes in larger 6- or 12-foot widths that are either cut to fit or come in prepared rolls. Sheet vinyl is ideal for high-moisture rooms like bathrooms.

Luxury vinyl plank offers the most realistic look and feel of all vinyl types, with all the benefits of vinyl.

With proper surface prep, vinyl flooring can be installed over any underlayment as well as concrete, tile, wood or uncushioned vinyl flooring.
