Step flashing protects your home from leaks and unwanted moisture. It's comprised of weather-resistant materials like galvanized steel, plastic or aluminum. Step flashing is installed around areas where water can seep in, such as roofs, chimneys, windows, doors, skylights and more.

What is Step Flashing?

Step flashing is a specially-shaped piece of metal that spans the joint between roof shingles and adjacent walls. It prevents water from getting into the walls, diverting rain or melting snow away from walls or chimneys. Here are a few ways that step flashing can protect your home.

Roofing
Step flashing helps to provide your roof with an added layer of weatherproofing protection. It can also serve as wood post protection from harmful insects or moisture.

Siding
Z flashing is used between stacked sheets of siding to prevent water from leaking behind lower siding sheets. It also provides protection from the elements. The Z flashing matches the thickness of the siding and can be painted to match the color for a seamless look.

Doors and Windows
Adjustable flashing is available to prevent water damage from window and door leaks. Sloping weep areas direct the moisture away from your home.

Multi-Purpose
Multi-purpose step flashing helps protect areas around chimneys, roof vents and roof jacks from the elements. When step flashing is being installed, it's important to overlap pieces to prevent leaks from occurring.

Step flashing can also be used for patching or even hobby needs.

Need to Know

Step flashing cuts easily with tin snips, but it has very sharp metal edges. You'll need to wear safety gloves when installing it.
