Don’t let cooler temperatures stop you from enjoying your outdoor patio. The best patio heaters help keep you and your guests warm long after the sun goes down. Here’s how to decide what type of patio heater is best for your porch, patio or deck.

Patio Heater Basics

When purchasing a patio heater, think about the size of the space you want to heat. On average, a patio heater warms a 20-foot radius from its base. Patio heaters use a measurement called a BTUs to refer to how much heat is emitted per hour. The higher the BTUs listed on the patio heater, the higher the heat output.

Generally, it takes about 20 BTUs to heat one square foot of patio space. The average porch or patio can be heated using one or two outdoor heaters. Generally, for a covered patio, you’ll need one patio heater for every 1,500 to 2,000 square feet. For uncovered patio space, you’ll need one patio heater for every 300 to 350 square feet.

Caution

To avoid injury or accidents, always consult the manufacturer’s instruction manual for proper use of your patio heater, and always place the heater on an even, stable surface to prevent tipping.

Which Patio Heater is Best: 3 Types of Patio Heaters

Patio heaters are powered by either propane, natural gas or electricity. Select the best energy source for your patio or porch.

Propane Patio Heaters

Propane patio heaters are the most common type of outdoor patio heaters. Self-contained portable units, these patio heaters are typically connected to a propane tank. They’re easy to use, available in a variety of styles and they don’t require professional installation. Many liquid outdoor propane heaters are large and emit more warmth than natural gas heaters.

Mushroom-shaped propane heaters reflect heat down and out, allowing them to heat larger areas. Liquid propane heaters work well in cold climates — even when temperatures dip below freezing. They’re efficient, clean burning and don’t produce smoke.

When purchasing propane gas tanks, keep tank size in mind. You’ll need to replace a smaller tank more often, while a larger tank holds more propane and provides a longer heating time.

Caution

Never use a propane heater indoors or in garages as the fumes emitted in an enclosed space are dangerous.

Natural Gas Patio Heaters

Natural gas patio heaters are usually permanent fixtures that require professional installation. If a natural gas line already exists out to your porch, this option may be a good choice. You also never have to worry about a tank being empty or running out during a party. Natural gas patio heaters are easy to maintain and instantly produce a full range of heat. Gas heaters also have the benefit of being secured in place, so you’ll know they’ll stay upright and in a safe location while in use.

Caution

Always hire a licensed professional to install the special lines for natural gas products. Never install a natural gas heater in a totally enclosed area.

Electric Patio Heaters

Electric patio heaters provide radiant heat, consume the least amount of energy and are considered a safe option for outdoor heating. Most electric patio heaters plug directly into a standard 120-volt outlet.

Choose from standing electric patio heaters or units that mount on ceilings, posts, roof lines or under canopies. Outdoor heat lamps offer instant heat with very little warm-up time and are perfect for patios, gazebos, terraces, porches and pergolas.

Some electric patio heater models have an auto shut-off feature and a wireless remote for convenience. Electric patio heaters offer better heat control with variable settings. They’re a good choice if you have an enclosed space or don’t want to deal with propane tanks.

While some patio heaters may be waterproof, it’s always a good idea to use a patio heater cover to keep the elements out. This helps prevent rust, mildew and malfunctions from impacting even the best outdoor patio heaters. Covers also help keep the heater functional and preserves its look.
