Marine coolers are designed to withstand the harsher environmental elements of boating and fishing. Take a closer look at what makes these stand out compared to other coolers, so you’re better prepared for your next open-water outing.

Benefits of Marine Coolers

While standard coolers are a good choice for picnics, tailgates and other similar events, packing up for a day or more of fishing or recreational boating means you’ll need a cooler that’s a little more rugged. Marine coolers are designed to withstand the harsher environmental elements you’re likely to encounter while out on the water: direct sunlight, heat, wind and more. They also have great ice retention and plenty of storage. With the right boat cooler on board, you can easily keep provisions chilled or catches of the day fresh until you’re back on land.

Tip

Marine coolers also make a great choice for camping and other outdoor adventures where conditions may be more rugged.

Good to Know

Rotomolded coolers are also extremely durable options that can take you from fishing trips to backyard barbecues.

Marine Cooler Features

When shopping for the best boat cooler, keep these essential performance features in mind.

Ice Retention

Ice retention is a measurement, typically in days, of how long the cooler’s contents will stay cold. Some coolers can keep contents cold for at least five days, while other models can keep contents cold longer. A good marine cooler will not only keep the interior cold, but prevent heat from getting in. These coolers have denser insulation, like foam-insulated lids and sides, to meet these cooling standards. It’s also why most coolers for boats are white — to reflect the sun’s heat. When shopping, consider the duration of your excursion. Is it a single day or multiple days? You’ll want to make sure that your boat ice chest can keep food, drinks and catches cold for the maximum amount of time you plan to be out on the water or away from other means of cooled storage.

Storage Capacity

Storage capacity depends on a few factors, including what you plan to use the cooler for, how large a group you’ll be with or how long you’ll be fishing. You’ll also need to make sure that the cooler will fit on your boat. Cooler size is generally measured in quarts, and most models will give you a can capacity, which is helpful if you plan on using the majority of your cooler space for beverages.

Tip

For fishing trips, consider packing two coolers. One for your catches and one for food and drinks.

Durability

Since marine coolers spend their time in tough elements, they need to be able to hold their own. Hard-sided options are generally best. Look for other features like rust-resistant hardware, including hinges and screws, and UV protection.

Durability also needs to be accounted for if you plan to use your boat cooler as additional seating. Not every cooler is sturdy enough to be sat on, so check the manufacturer’s guidelines to make sure it can accommodate the extra weight.

Small Details Matter

While it’s essential to have a cooler that’s durable, big enough to meet your storage needs and keeps everything inside cold for multiple days, there are other features that can benefit your adventures.

  • Built-in cup holders give you a designated place for your drinks.
  • Built-in fishing rod holders maintain your pole while you wait for a bite.
  • Durable and comfortable handles make the cooler easier to carry.
  • Wheels make it easier to get your cooler to different locations.
  • Drain plugs allow you to easily empty the melted ice.
  • Lockable latches keep contents safe.
  • Non-skid feet and/or tie down points keep the cooler secure when ocean conditions are rough.
  • Measurement markings on the lid let you see how big your catch of the day is.
  • An easy-to-clean interior gets it quickly ready for its next use.

Caring for Your Cooler

A marine cooler with a drain plug makes cleaning out the interior a lot easier, but there’s more to do to keep your cooler in good shape. Here’s a quick rundown of how to clean your cooler.

  • Empty out all the contents from the cooler.
  • Drain any water and then rinse the interior.
  • Wipe it completely dry.
  • Wipe down the handles, hinges, sides and lid.

Beyond the Cooler

When spending time out on the water a marine cooler is essential, but you’ll need other gear and supplies too. Make sure your boat has life vests and pack extras if needed. For fishing excursions, stock up on fishing gear, like extra rods, fishing line, lures and bait and more. Depending on the type of fishing you’re doing, you might also need the appropriate apparel.
