Types of Kegerators

What Is a Kegerator?
A kegerator refrigerates a keg of beer, keeping it cold for you and your guests. Depending on whether the beer is unpasteurized or pasteurized, you can expect it to last anywhere from two to six months, making it an economical and convenient alternative to your favorite bar.

The majority of kegerators are used for beer, but there are also coffee and wine kegerators available. There are several different types of kegerators to choose from including freestanding, built-in and conversion kits. We'll explain the benefits and features of each.

Freestanding Kegerators
These kegerators are designed to place in any open space including: basements, recreation rooms, wet bars and more. For easier mobility, select a freestanding kegerator that's on casters. Most of the time, the air vents are located in the back, so they can't be used in an enclosed space.

Undercounter or Built-in Kegerators
If you're placing your kegerator in a cabinet surround or enclosed space, you'll need a built-in or undercounter kegerator. They're vented in the front and are ideal if you're renovating your kitchen or entertainment space for a modern and streamlined look.

Kegerator Conversion Kits
If you want to design and customize a kegerator to your liking, then a kegerator conversion kit is the ideal solution. The kits typically include the fridge, a drip tray, top cover, guard rail, and casters. Use your existing hardware or components to configure the number of taps you'd like.

Number of Taps

On a kegerator, your beverage of choice is dispensed from a tap. If it's just for the household, a single tap may be all that's needed. But if you like to entertain and enjoy offering your guests several varieties of beer, a triple or quadruple-tap kegerator may be preferred. The different options include:

  • Single-Tap Kegerator
  • Double-Tap Kegerator
  • Triple Tap
  • Quadruple Tap
  • Tapless: A tapless kegerator is just the kegerator fridge. You'll need to use existing hardware or purchase taps for the kegerator to be operational.

Keg Sizes

Depending on the size and specifications of your kegerator model, you'll have the option to select different keg sizes for your needs. For example, you may decide that you want to have one half-barrel keg on tap for everyday enjoyment. But for a party where you want more variety, you can change it to accommodate three sixth-barrel kegs.

Keg sizes are as follows:

  • 1/6 Kegerator (sixth barrel keg)
  • 1/4 Kegerator (quarter barrel keg)
  • Half a Barrel Keg (half barrel kegerator)

Mini Kegerator
Another option is a mini kegerator. These tabletop versions are convenient and portable. They hold up to 5 liters, keeping your beer chilled and fresh for up to a month.
