Blinds and Shades Child Safety Guide

Holly Honeycutt

Corded window shades and blinds pose a choking hazard to children and pets. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports a child under 10 years old dies from window cord strangulation monthly. We’ll provide safety tips and window treatment options to reduce the risks of this hidden hazard.

Safety Changes

Most blinds, shades, and similar window treatments sold in the United States and Canada are now cordless or feature short, inaccessible cords. However, window blinds and shades in older homes or hotels might not comply with the updated 2018 industry standards, which address cord safety to prevent hazards for children.

What's the Solution?
Cordless blinds and cordless shades have a lift mechanism to easily lift and lower them. They're available manually or can be motorized. We have hundreds of options to choose from that would be a safe and attractive addition to your home.

A Commitment to Our Customers

Lowe's prioritizes consumer trust and safety, recognizing that these elements are essential for fostering long-lasting relationships with our customers.

Parents for Window Blind Safety is a non-profit organization that's dedicated to educating consumers and keeping children safe. When you're looking for new blinds and shades, find the Lab Tested, Mom Approved logo (as shown).

Commitment to Safety
Just as retailers are responsible for ensuring that the products they sell meet safety standards, we are dedicated to advocating for the highest safety measures in window blind products. Our mission is to educate consumers about potential hazards and promote products that adhere to rigorous safety guidelines. This shared commitment to safety not only protects families but also enhances the credibility of both advocates and retailers in the eyes of consumers.

Building Trust Through Transparency
Retailers who prioritize transparency in their product offerings cultivate trust among their customers. Similarly, we strive to provide clear, reliable information about window blind safety, empowering consumers to make informed choices. When both advocates and retailers communicate openly about safety standards and practices, it reinforces a culture of trust that benefits everyone involved.

Advocacy for Purpose
Aligning with advocates gives retailers a sense of purpose that resonates with today’s consumers. As we champion safety and awareness, retailers can enhance their brand image by supporting our mission. This collaboration not only demonstrates a commitment to social responsibility but also appeals to consumers who increasingly seek brands that reflect their values.

Child-Friendly Blinds and Shades

When selecting blinds and shades for your home, Lowe's has many child-friendly options for you to choose from with styles to suit any budget.

Cordless Blind
Cordless blinds can be made of plastic, bamboo or metal. They're available as mini-blinds, faux wood blinds and vertical window or door blinds. In-stock blinds come in a wide range of sizes and are less expensive than custom-sized blinds. Choose from light-filtering or room-darkening blinds.

Motorized Shades
With the push of a button, your pre-cut or custom blinds and shades can open in the morning and close up at night. Motorized shades are usually made of polyester, faux wood or PVC, but fabric, jute and aluminum versions are also available. Motorized shades are available indoors or outdoors with varying degrees of light control from sheer to blackout.

Interior Shutters
Plastic or wood shutters can add beauty to your home's interiors. They're on hinges for easy maneuverability. Adjustable slats provide light and privacy. Shutters look great in kitchens, living rooms, dining rooms and bathrooms.

Roller Shades
These shades are usually made of fabric, solar or vinyl. They're mounted on the inside or outside of a window frame, but they provide a sleeker look if they're installed inside. Roller shades are available cordless or motorized.  They're also offered with a continuous cord loop which includes a tension device mounted near the window.

Cellular Shades
Cellular shades, also known as honeycomb shades, provide privacy, dampen sound and insulate against heat and cold. They’re great for bedrooms and living rooms. Options include light filtering, room darkening and blackout. Cellular shades can be used on doors, windows and side lights.  Cellular shades are also available in cordless, motorized, or continuous cord loop with a tension device.
