Step 1

To keep greenery fresh longer, line a basket with plastic sheeting and tape it in place around the inside edge. Cut a block of floral foam to fit the basket and press it firmly inside.

Good to Know

For making smooth cuts in foam, use a large kitchen bread knife with a serrated blade.

Step 2

Trim long branches for the back of the basket and insert them into the foam there.

Step 3

Cut the branches progressively smaller as you work toward the front of the basket. Layer the different types of branches -- we used pine, spruce, and cedar -- for contrast.

Step 4

Push stems with dried berries between the branches. Add the pinecones as space allows. If necessary, tie them to the branches with thin floral wire or 24-gauge galvanized wire.

Step 5

If you lined your basket in the first step, add water to the foam until it’s moist. Continue watering it periodically as it dries out.
