How to Seed a New Lawn
Dig or till the ground to a 3-inch depth. Rake to remove clods and smooth out the surface. Remember that you’re establishing a finished grade, so include any contours needed for drainage.
Add compost, topsoil and starter fertilizer and then work them into the soil.
Spread the grass seed at the rate indicated on the packaging. To ensure even coverage, sow half of the seed in one direction and the other half in a different direction to make a crisscross pattern.

Rake the entire area again to cover the seeds with a small amount of soil. Mulch with a weed-free straw, such as wheat straw, or use an erosion control blanket to prevent the seed from blowing or washing away.
Water frequently to keep the seeds moist (don’t saturate). Cut watering back to once a day when the grass reaches about 1 inch in height.
Mow when the grass reaches 2-1/2 to 3 inches. After you’ve mown three times, use a regular watering schedule of 1 inch per week. After mowing a minimum of four times, apply a crabgrass control product to stop the germination of unsightly crabgrass.

What Customers Are Saying
Customers praise the seed's ability to grow thick, green lawns in challenging conditions like clay soil and shade, with many noting rapid growth and excellent heat and drought tolerance. Application is straightforward and easy to spread. However, some reviewers experienced poor or no germination despite following instructions, often citing environmental factors or timing issues. A few mention cost concerns relative to coverage area. Overall, most customers report strong satisfaction and would recommend, though results depend heavily on consistent watering and proper soil conditions.

I was primarily using this for overseeding. i watered daily in eastern north carolina. even had some heavy rains after applying seed. thirty days later, I was left with clusters of dead seed that never propagated. i purchased it in early spring and the bag was very worn and had multiple holes repaired by the store. may have been last year's stock and unviable seed. overall, very displeased.

Grass Seed
This grass seed worked really well for me. I used it to fill in some bare spots, and it started coming in within about 10 days. It grows in thick, looks nice and green, and holds up well in the sun and with regular foot traffic. The coverage was solid for the price, and it was pretty easy to get going as long as I kept it watered. Overall, a great, no-fuss option if you’re trying to improve your lawn without spending a ton. I’d use it again.
Great Results
This product seems to be working. We had a landscaper out to put down grass seed even after watering it had trouble growing then I put out the Kentucky 31 seed and it has drastically improved! I would definitely recommend this product.
Not the same tall fescue as Rebels
I always use Pennington Rebels Tall Fescue but they were out so I bought this thinking it was the same. It is not. The blades are coarser, grows at a faster rate, and is lighter in color. It is more suitable as pasture grass than for lawns.
