Don't waste your money on this item
These threaded inserts are made from poor quality material and easily break off when attempting to install in fairly soft wood. In the past I've used far better quality inserts.

Install as intended
They do work as long as you don't follow the instructions that Lowes has posted. The SLOT is NOT for a flat head screwdriver. Use a 1/4" bolt and 2 jam nuts with the insert installed slot first. This slot is for cutting the threads into the wood. I used a 1/4" impact driver after drilling a 5/16" hole 1/2" deep and they all went in perfectly. You will need to loosen the jam nuts with a wrench to release and go to the next one so have a couple 5/16" open end or combo wrenches handy. I did use the...

Waste of time and money
Ordered online to insure insert was in stock. Notified it was and traveled to pick up. Order filled with wrong part. Item was not in stock. Wasted time and gas, again, shopping at Lowe's.

Brittle and broke
There must have been something off about this batch. I purchased 10 bags but only 4 bags were usable. The other 6 bags worth cracked and broke when installing into my project. Yes, I pre-drilled the hole. I collected the broken pieces and am hoping to get a refund for those.

Insert bolt before tapping
As others advised, worked perfect if shorter bolt inserted first used to drive screw. Drilled 1” hole using 1/2” drill bit into plywood, and screwed into wood using ratchet, seated perfectly.
