place the tie strap through the slot in the ratchet piece, leave enough sticking through so when you begin to ratchet the handle it will have enough to wrap and secure the strap and all you have to do then is ratchet away.

Take the short part of the strap, it generally has a little bit of a "bend" (sort of looks like a phone receiver). Turn the bent end over so that it faces up. Hook the long end to your first attach point, then feed the flat part of the long end thru the little slit, then pull it back up. hook that end to your second attach point, keep tension on line, then begin ratchet. You should see and feel the strap begin to tighten.
