HOW DEEP DOES THE WATER NEED TO BE?

That's a great question. You will just need to add at least enough water to cover the top of the filter box which has the pump inside. We would suggest to add more if this will be in direct sunlight or other area where the water will evaporate quickly, so the pump does not run without being fully submerged as this could cause burn out.
