on any painted surfaces, you need to sand them really rough prior to putting on mortar.
Was this Answer Helpful ?I would not recommend applying tile to a steel wall unless it is heavy steel plate like 1/4" (even then I wouldn't recommend it#. Steel's expansion rate will far exceed most adhesives, it'll break the bond with your tile and you'll end up having them falling off your wall. I HIGHLY recommend removing your metal panels. But if you cannot remove them I would fasten your light gauge panels down every 6" to 8" to combat the expansion rate. Use an adhesive like a PL250 to adhere to the metal. With heavier steel plate like 1/4" just go ahead and use the PL250. Make sure you CLEAN your metal with acetone. With paint I'd sand the surface to rough up the paint. Any pealing paint...get rid of it. ...please remove the steel and apply a cement backer board though...you'll be happier in the long run. #I'm a contractor that specializes in architectural sheet metal by the way#
