Most of these handsets and deadbolts have an adjustable shaft that easily adjusts or extends with a sleeve that is part of the mechanism. It's important to check the spec's on the box to make sure. I use a lot of these and have never had a problem adjusting this to fit a regular door.

Locate the cross cut out. Insert a screwdriver in the cross cut out. Turn the screwdriver so that it extends the bolt. Once the bilt is extended, take the latch in both hands and twist your hands in opposite directions. The bolt will now be set to 2 3/4. Make sure to lock it back into place and retract the bolt before installation.
