After You Spread It Out, Tamp It Real Good And It Will Be Smooth. Be Careful For The First Few Days, Deer Will Leave Their Foot Prints In The Asphalt Until It Sets Up.

It doesn't go on smooth. It's made up of coarse gravel and is not smooth like normal asphalt

It's small granules & can be packed easily, but, not being a solid material, granules wash away too.

This question may have been placed under the wrong product. If this is for the quck patch product, it is not smooth and consists of pea gravel stone with a tar like product. It stays soft for months before developing a 'skin' and stays mallable for at least a year.
