Yes these will work. SHort end under shelf. I would space them about 3 feet apart no more. Also depends on what will be stored. Very light stuff then further would be ok. 20-40 lb boxes then definitely 3 feet.

That would depend on the length of the shelf and how much weight you intend to put on it. I use as many on-center studs that the shelf will accommodate spaced evenly.
