If you are using a 8 foot Post you will need to dig 4 Feet to leave 4 ft exposed That is overkill a 6 Foot Post if you use cement will work Fine.

You're supposed to use a 6-foot-long post and bury it two feet in the ground.

The instructions for the 157720 Mayne mail post say to dig a 2' hole so that a 6' 4x4 will extend up 4'. We did that and it fit perfectly. We used a post hole digger and tamped the soil back into the hole around the 4x4. We have a lot of clay in our soil so we hope that will work out. If it doesn't we can pull it out and put concrete around it.

8 feet is recommended.

I used a 6' post but they recommend 8'. The 6' left 2' in the ground. I thought it was pretty sturdy that way.
