Why can this item not be used on the ceiling ?


It can be used on the ceiling.

If your adhereing it to an existing drywall ceiling it should be fine to use. If not I would worry about the strength of the board holding up the addition of insulation, wires and other things typically stored above the ceiling. It is a fine wallcover where no issues of supporting exist. I would never replace any drywall with it only cover existing drywall for looks.
