Seriously, the only way is to feel of the tape. Yes, it has a light on the plug, but that only tells you it has electricity going to it. 150 Limit???

When you plug the cord into the outlet a little orange light will come on. Once you plug it in, the black cord will begin to heat up. The heat starts near the thermostat and works its way down the black cord until the whole black line is warm. I'm not sure what temperature the line stays at but it will turn on and off to keep the line at a certain temperature, just like the thermostat does for an air conditioner or furnace. We're staying in an rv. We wrapped the black cord around the hose to keep it from freezing. We just wrapped it around we didn't put any tape or anything. It seemed to have worked pretty good. We also ran the hose throught a piece of insulated duct to keep the snow off of it. I'm sure the line would stay warm enough to melt the snow and keep the water line from freezing.
