What is the purpose of the metal plate in the back


Pam, Thank you for your question. Wall plates are the sixth side of an electrical box and they need to meet electrical code requirements. In this case, the front side of the wall plate (made of Medium Density Fiberboard) creates the decorative front of the wall plate while the steel plate on the back provides safe coverage of the electrical box.
