Can a polyurethane be tinted to an amber color? Can amber shellac seal over a factory finished oak floor?

Traditionally hardwood floors are finished with linseed oil. Oil based varnishes are great for hardwood floors. If the floor is scratched or damaged it can easily be repaired by light sanding and rubbing linseed oil on the floor or a product like Old English scratch remover. If one tries to apply polyurethane varnish to floor that has been finished with linseed oil or a oil based varnish it will bead up, making a mess of the floor. Shellac is best used on old furniture or paneling. Shellac will restore the luster and cover odors caused by smoking. If a shellac finish is scratched you can use denatured alcohol to blend in the scratch..

"Clear" is never water clear, most "regular" polys have a substantial amber to them. can amber shellac seal over a factory finished oak floor? If it is free from waxes and oils, yes. Shellac will stick to almost every other finish. What kind of finish is on a factory sealed oak floor? It varies by manufacturer, but almost all use one form of polyurethane or another because of it's toughness can a poly even be plied over it? Poly can be applied over poly IF it is free from wax and oil, And it is lightly sanded to give the previous finish "tooth" for the next coat to hold to. As much as I love to finish with shellac, for a floor is one project there are so many better choices than shellac. On a floor,Polyurethane is by far the best choice for durability ,beauty and ease of use.
