Sure. The rinse portion of the system flushes salt water across the plastic pellets to remove hard water deposits. That is then flushed out of the system. The GE unit comes with a long drain line that can either connect via a trap to your drains or just drain into a gutter or downspout outside if you are close enough. If you have a basement sump it would be good there as well. The important thing to check before connecting it to your sewer or septic system is local plumbing codes to avoid the possibility of sewer backup into your drinking water supply--hence the need for a trap and/or an air-gap between the water softener flush line and your septic.
