Yes it would, BUT, it has to be made of plastic or salt resistant metal. If it isn't, it won't take long for the brine from the w/s to eat away the impeller...

The maximum amount of water the softener could use per regeneration is 43 gallons. The actual amount varies depending on the amount of salt used, which depends on the hardness of your water. The softener discharges the water over approximately 2 hours, not all at once.
