Use a carbon / charcoal inline water filter. I'm guessing this is from a private water well. If ALL the water smells bad (Hot and cold) what I have done in the past was to pour a few gallons of Clorox bleach down my well. Hook up a garden hose to the furthest water spout and run it back right into the well. Run water thru all water faucets, the tub run hot water all until you can smell the chlorine, then shut them off . Just let it run over night. .Then take the hose out of the well pipe and find a safe place to just let the water run. It's going to be heavily chlorinated and will kill your grass. Find a suitable place to pump this water. When the chlorine smell is gone you can shut the hose off and run water thru everything in your home until the chlorine smell is gone. Run the hot water until the chlorine smell is gone also. If you have an Reverse Osmosis system "MAKE SURE, THE WATER SUPPLY TO IT IS OFF BEFORE RUNNING CHLORINATED WATER TO IT". It will destroy the membrane filter (The expensive filter). Doing this should help with your smell. You can use the test kit that comes with this Water softener to see what level you should start at to soften the water. This is a water softener and not intended to remove smell. I have done the chlorine treatment a few times myself. But I also have extremely hard water. And this water softener works outstanding at softening the water.
Was this Answer Helpful ?When you speak of settings it refers to the hardness of your water ..... Your BAD smell is most likely from SULFUR in your WATER SOURCE . To correct the smell try a WHOLE HOUSE WATER FILTER . Connect the FILTER before your house water enters the Water Softener and then on into the house. Different filters offer types of filtering .... Choose accordingly or Speak with a Lowe's agent at the store. Regarding your water hardness setting ... If you don't know how hard your water is in your area ... Are you getting lots of lather ( soap suds ) in the shower ? If Not , Turn the setting up a couple of notches . A water Softener will not help the smell .
